Souring the Sugar: Brandi Milne’s Raw Subversion of Pop Surrealism
This May, Milne returned to downtown Los Angeles’ Corey Helford Gallery (CHG) with Now, and Forevermore. Four years in the making, this highly anticipated main gallery exhibition is an intimate, raw offering shaped by grief, tenderness, and the enduring human struggle to find light within the dark.
Milne has spent years cementing her status as a leading voice in Pop Surrealism, largely due to her ability to subvert expectations. Her signature “candy-coated” aesthetic draws from a nostalgic visual sandbox: a childhood in Anaheim, California steeped in classic Disney animation, vintage holiday iconography, fables, and confectionary color palettes.
But look past the luminous hues and whimsical characters, and you’ll find an unfiltered emotional landscape acting as a safe haven for the complexities of being alive.
“Art is a sacred space where I go to hear my heart sing. It is how I hold and behold my humanity… and how I give voice to the parts of me that struggle to be fully seen and heard.”
By embedding heavy psychological depth inside deceptively playful imagery, Milne cradles human suffering rather than shying away from it. In a world currently defined by overwhelming disconnection, her paintings serve as an urgent, gentle invitation to reconnect with our own heartbeat.
The delicate, wide-eyed figures inhabiting Now, and Forevermore act as emotional surrogates for both the artist and the viewer, carrying the weight of resilience and memory. Each piece feels like an intimate
Milne’s willingness to offer up her own vulnerability reminds us that true personal triumph only comes after we venture into life’s challenging undercurrents.
“Now, and Forevermore is an invitation to venture a little deeper with me into some of life’s challenging undercurrents. See beyond the sweet veneer of my work into the ever-vibrant process of being fully human. Witness hope and despair, love and loss, and ultimate personal triumph.”
